Small “tuna-tin” upcycled telephone wire basket
These small baskets, hand woven using telephone wire, sell like hot cakes in my shop in Lagrasse. Whether you use them for your loose change, to organise your earrings or rings, or simply as decoration, they will bring a chic touch of colour and design to your home.
Handmade, one by one, they illustrate the ability of Zulu artisans in South Africa to apply their ancestral tradition of weaving natural fibres to create a contemporary and modern object with a practical recycled industrial material.
These small baskets are woven around a can of tuna! Their construction is interesting because, unlike traditional basketry, where you start at the centre and finish at the edges, it's the opposite. with these artisanal baskets … you start at the edge, which is reinforced with wire, and finish in the centre. When you look closely at the centre of these baskets, you will not see any trace of this finish. Impressive craftsmanship.
100% telephone wire.
Each hand woven bowl is unique, and the patterns vary slightly from one bowl to another.
