What do you do with the plastic strapping on boxes after you’ve opened them? Weave them into a handbag of course! The South African ingenaoutuity, creativity and vision astounds me. What seems like an annoying material that goes straight into the bin, has become the latest source of materials for a new weaver that I met on my recent trip to Cape Town.
He collects discarded strapping from several businesses in Cape Town, cleans them up, and weaves them into shopping bags. As soon as I saw his range I commissioned him to make a small, handbag size to my specifications and colour/design choices. This exclusive collection is the result.
Plus a tassel to personalise it. The upcycled leather tassels are created by crafters in war-torn Mali. They make wonderful door handle key rings as I noticed recently at a friend’s house ! All part of my Double Life campaign to utilise what already exists and give it a second use.
